The Project:

Long Canyon Mine is a high-grade multi-million ounce oxide deposit located between Elko and Wendover in Northern Nevada. This new open-pit gold mine, carved into the side of the Pequop Mountains, required 3 years of careful planning and construction. It provides significant exploration potential in an emerging district and is the only significant, major discovery in Nevada in the last decade. The goal was to develop district potential while building and delivering an operation to produce gold. This project generated dozens of jobs during the planning and construction phases and will employ hundreds during its operation. It involved 130,000 square feet and a complex of buildings.

The building erector for this project, J & M Steel Solutions of Lehi Utah, was looking for an innovative insulation solution that would allow the project to stay on schedule and meet the owner’s safety concerns with a building eave height of 65’.

The Challenges:

This project site was located in high-country desert at an elevation of 5,800’ and was subject to high winds with a short window of time of good weather to build. Additionally, being a mining site with inherent dangers, there were additional requirements that needed to be met in order to insure long-term safety. The combination of high wind and safety ruled out the use of other insulation options.

Solution:

The insulation supplier recommended that the building erector try R-Seal® due to its light weight, high R-value and the ability to order it in custom lengths. This allowed installation of the insulation and siding in conditions that would have been impossible with other insulation systems.

Success:

Using R-Seal® between the framing and under the GEM Building exterior siding allowed for quick dry-in of the building, in a safe manner, despite the high winds on the jobsite. The custom layout (provided with each project) made it was easy to identify where each piece was to be installed. The erector was very pleased with the ease R-Seal® installed and plans utilizing R-Seal® on many future projects.
